From the beginning of life we crave connection. Babies reach out, snuggle in, and loudly object to separation. If that closeness is taken away, they fail to thrive and can become emotionally stunted. That need doesn\u2019t disappear as we age. Adults also crave closeness, but the focus shifts to our families, good friends, mentors, even religious figures.The most common match, though, is with our partner in a romantic relationship, the person who we know will come when we call, be available when we need support, and trust us to be that stable support for them.Problems can arise, though, when we aren\u2019t able to clearly express, or accurately hear, what we need in that relationship. The result can be a disheartening cycle of pushing for what we want or withdrawing from demands we don\u2019t understand. Eventually that cycle can lead us to absorb the basic fears of abandonment and rejection, the opposite of the sure connection we so badly need.That\u2019s where Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy can be a great help. EFT was developed in the 1980s by psychologists Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg to help couples caught in an unhappy cycle of misunderstanding based on their fears of abandonment and rejection.Johnson identifies three types of dysfunctional attachment that develops when couples are in trouble:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. An anxious partner, desperate to recapture a sense of closeness, may appear angry and aggressive as he struggles for a response.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. An avoidant partner, eager to feel safe and settled in the relationship, will withdraw, give in, or opt out of conversations she fears will lead to argument and eventual separation.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A fearful partner demonstrates a confusing \u201ccome close-go away\u201d behavior in an attempt to at once capture intimacy and protect himself from rejection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    None of those behavior styles allows the couple to achieve the sense of safety and intimacy they both crave.<\/span><\/p>\n

    An EFT therapist\u2019s first concern will be creating a space where both partners feel safe to express their true feelings without being judged or rejected. She will guide you through three stages of therapy:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. De-escalating the negative cycle the relationship has fallen into. This could involve helping partners recognize when one is demanding and the other withdrawing, or both are withdrawing from their relationship.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Restructuring the bond between partners using \u201chold me tight\u201d conversation where both partners are encouraged to talk honestly about their fears and desires.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Consolidating the changes the partners have made, reinforcing their effort, and applauding their discoveries. The therapist will help the partners recognize how their relationship got stuck and what steps they took to repair it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      This may seem like a lot of work, but EFT\u2019s focused approach allows progress to occur in a short time, usually between 8 and 20 sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n
