5 Reminders of Why It’s Great To Be Single
Ahhh.. The holiday season is upon us. Time to cuddle up with your partner, sip hot cocoa, take turns stringing lights, wonder what lies underneath that shiny wrapping paper—all while smiling adoringly at each other. If you’re single, reading that sentence probably just made you cringe. It’s not easy being single during the holidays, considering the 4-month onslaught of jewelry commercials, the couples surrounding you at holiday parties and the unavoidable question “So, have you met anyone yet?” during hometown visits. Because we are constantly reminded that the holiday season is about celebrating togetherness, it’s no wonder that singles report increased feelings of loneliness during the winter months. What commercials, family and friends forget to say is that there is a real upside to navigating the holidays solo. Don’t believe us? In a recent survey, respondents reported a celebration of freedom and family when asked “What’s the best part of being single during the holidays?” Here are the 5 most common answers:
- No Pressure – You don’t have to find the “perfect” gift for your partner and (partner’s) relatives
- Letting Loose – You can flirt outrageously with people who are looking good in their holiday best.
- Keeping It Simple – Not having to synch traveling plans means less stress and more time with your own family.
- Having It Your Way – Compromise sucks! You don’t have to forfeit any of your holiday traditions.
- It’s My Party – You can avoid being a “+1” at any work parties or events where you don’t know anyone and will face a night full of awkward conversations and bad dancing.
Whether you’ve been single for awhile or are newly single and start to feel like you’re missing out, try to remind yourself that you have a lot to celebrate. Enjoy the best of the holiday season – go where you want to go, spend uncompromised time with those you love and do whatever brings you joy.
